When an Investor Dies, Are Government Securities Lost or Inaccessible?
No. Treasury Bonds and Treasury Bills held by a deceased investor remain protected and can be transferred to the rightful beneficiaries under the Bank of Tanzania Guidelines on Transfer of Deceased Investor Holdings, 2026.

What you need to do first:
- Apply to the High Court for probate or letters of administration
What the Administrator/ Executor Must Do
Your two main steps:
Step 1: Request Information
- Contact the Bank of Tanzania
- Ask for details about the deceased’s government securities
- Find out what they owned and its value
Step 2: Apply for Transfer
- Submit a formal letter requesting the transfer
- State who the beneficiaries are
- Request that securities be moved to the administrator/ executor CDS account
Documents You Must Gather
For requesting information:
- Court grant (probate or letters of administration)
- Your ID (National ID, passport, voter’s ID, or driving licence)
For applying for transfer:
- Court judgment
- Court order naming the beneficiaries
Transferring to the Administrator
What happens at this stage:
- The Bank confirms all the deceased’s CDS holdings
- The Bank checks if any securities are pledged as collateral
- The securities are placed under the Administrator’s temporary control
Final Transfer to Beneficiaries
The last step:
- Bank verifies the court order naming beneficiaries together with confirming CDs accounts for beneficiaries
- Bank instructs the Central Securities Depository Registrar (CSDR) to transfer deceased Securities into each beneficiary’s personal account
- Each beneficiary receives a statement of their holdings
